Lent 2011: Relentless acts of Justice

There is not much reflection or forward thinking going into this decision. Just a gut reaction to something my internet surfing took me to this morning. And you know what? It’s how many of my life’s decisions happen. A thought in the shower leads to a new organization. A moment of verbal processing with my husband leads to serious thoughts of moving overseas. A 30 second video moves me to tears and changes how the next month of our lives look. This is me.

I’ve never really worshipped through the Lent season. Our evangelical churches seem to neglect this time of preparation for the celebration of Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross. Giving up candy or meat or some other treasured part of my life as a means of sharing in his sufferings just never connected to my heart.

But my heart is very connected to thoughts on faith and justice. Very moved by the reality of the incarnation of Christ.

Today I saw this:

and have decided that I am going to lead the family through this season of Lent along with the advocacy network of World Vision, ACT:S.

Join us as we encounter even this first prayer of blessing tonight at dinner:

May God bless you with discomfort. Discomfort at easy answers, half truths, and superficial relationships, so that you may live deep within your heart. Amen

May God bless you with anger. Anger at injustice, oppression and exploitation of people, so that you may work for justice, freedom and peace. Amen

May God bless you with tears. Tears to shed for those who suffer from pain, rejection, starvation and war, so that you may reach out your hand to comfort them and turn their pain into joy. Amen

May God bless you with foolishness. Enough foolishness to believe that you can make a difference in this world, so that you can do what others claim cannot be done. Amen

And the blessing of God, who creates, redeems and sanctifies, be upon you and all you love and pray for this day, and forever more. Amen

What great prayers! God definitely has blessed me with some discomfort in recent days, and I am so humbled by the lessons I am learning through it. Thanking God that our paths have crossed, and I look forward to getting to know you and your family better. Hope all is well with Ella and Sophie (and Aiden’s ankle). Let us know if you guys need anything!!
